My best tip for all on marathon day

Recently, I was asked on the Runners World Forum, for 1 piece of advice for marathon day. Wow, what a question! My one piece of advice is to use a calm, helpful, directive, positive inner voice or self-talk. I liken this to the perfect coach. He or she who knows exactly what to say to you at any time to keep you going, running well, enjoying the challenge, soaking up the experience, making the most from the event. Be good to yourself, have a good event. Victor Dr Victor Thompson www.sportspsychologist.com

Tips for the night before your marathon

Sort your kit out: have a list, tick off what you pack for tomorrow. Include nutrition, clothing (for all likely weathers). Think about how ready you are, how you will rise to any challenges that face you tomorrow. Get to bed at a usual time: not too early if you will lie awake fretting. Not too late or you may feel groggy tomorrow. If you sleep, that’s a bonus. Your priority is to rest. So, if you don’t sleep that is okay, just take it easy, read something relaxing (non-marathon related) or daydream so you may fall asleep in a while. Have a good night.
